Are Your Kids Hurting Your Relationship?

Relationship Help For Couples With Children

Having children is one of the most incredible blessings and miracles one can experience in this lifetime. They bring into our lives a love that is indescribable. They deepen who we are and allow us to love unconditionally.

However, for many couples, once the children enter the picture, they allow their relationship to be put on the back burner. This is a critical yet common mistake, as it can lead to the demise of the relationship and break apart the family unit.

So how can a couple be sure to keep their relationship and family in tact?

Here are some Relationship Help Techniques to put into practice right now!
  • Treat your relationship as if it were the CEO of your family.
  • Make time to go on a date at least once a week.
  • At the end of the day, give each other at least 30 minutes to connect emotionally & physically.
  • Keep the boundaries between being parents and a couple very clear.
  • Communicate about your feelings, ideas, and frustrations about your children without attacking one another.
  • Clearly make a distinction between family time and couple time.
  • Always stand united as a couple and parents and do not allow the children to cause a split between you.
  • Help the children understand that “Mommy and daddy need adult time so they can be the best mommy and daddy possible.”
  • Always make your relationship a priority.

In my work over the years, I have seen great couples fall apart simply because they forgot to take care of their relationship.  They shifted all of their attention and focus onto their children, and left themselves and one another unattended.

The cold hard fact is that when a family breaks apart, it is the children who suffer the most. Therefore, protecting and nurturing your relationship is not only good for the two of you, it is critical for your children and their emotional, psychological, and physical well-being.
